Top Dog: Whiplash (2014)
Damien Chazelle came bursting onto the scene 12 years ago this past January when he brought his debut feature to Sundance-where it won both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition section and hasn't really looked back since as he has gone onto become one of the most celebrated American directors working today. Whiplash is a blistering, impressively assured piece of work that shines a light on how intense, cutthroat and toxic the world of elite music conservatories can be. Both leads (Teller, J.K. Simmons) turn in career-defining performances as an ambitious jazz drumming student whose obsession with becoming a great musician causes his wellbeing to rapidly deteriorate and intimidating maniac instructor who torments his students in the name of achieving perfection respectively and the final act contains some of the most pulse-pounding, electrifying filmmaking I've ever seen.
Bottom Feeder: 21 & Over (2013)
The Hangover writers Jon Lucas and Scott Moore decided to rip themselves off with their directorial debut about a 21st birthday celebration gone horribly wrong and it didn't really pan out all that well for them. Simply put, the insane situations the characters get themselves into are only occasionally funny and the nonexistent camaraderie between the trio of actors (Teller, Skylar Astin, Justin Chon) cast as best friends causes the integral buddy element of the plot to fall flat.
Most Underrated: The Spectacular Now (2013)
I just gassed up The Spectacular Now last week, so I'll be more succinct with my praise here. This overlooked gem from the early days of A24 is a special coming-of-age drama where the characters, their actions and relationships with each other are fearlessly authentic. It also happens to be one of the best "holy shit, (insert the name of an actor who is much more famous today than they were at the time of production) is in this!?!?! movies of the 2010's.
Most Overrated: Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Top Gun: Maverick is an entertaining legacy sequel that unintentionally helped elevate the profile of some talented actors in their 30's including Glen Powell, Monica Barbaro, Lewis Pullman and Danny Ramirez (not sure how Teller and Jay Ellis missed out on this bump, but that's a discussion point for another day). I just happen to find all the talk of this being a special movie that ranks among the best blockbusters ever made to be ridiculous. This entire endeavor exists to serve as a big celebration of Tom Cruise, and it gets kind of exhausting to watch the movie repeatedly stop and salute him for being the last of the virtuoso rebel actors who are willing to put their life at risk in exchange for professional glory. Here's to hoping they up the ante in Top Gun 3 and just have Maverick suck his own dick while he pats himself on the back for 2 hours.
