David Fincher Ranked

Welcome to the latest edition of "Ranked"-where I rank a franchise or filmography from worst to best and hand out related accolades. This week, I'm profiling the work of David Fincher-whose latest project "Mank" debuts on Netflix this Friday.

David Fincher's Filmography Ranked:

8.The Game (C)

7.Panic Room (C+)

6.Zodiac (B)

5.Seven (A-)

4.The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (A)

3.The Social Network (A)

2.Gone Girl (A)

1.Fight Club (A+)

Top Dog: Fight Club (1999)

I'm not a big reader, but Fight Club is an incredible novel that ranks very high on the shortlist of books I would call my favorites. Fincher's film adaptation pulled off the unthinkable by actually improving upon the spectacular source material. Courtesy of an overload of visceral punk energy and ensemble cast (Edward Norton, Brad Pitt, Helena Bonham Carter, Jared Leto, Meat Loaf, Zach Grenier) that fearlessly tackled this complex material that could've easily gone sideways in the hands of less committed performers, Fincher brought the dark wit, rampant mindfuckery and smart commentary on toxic masculinity that drives the novel to life in truly flawless fashion.

Lowlight: The Game (1997)

Gone Girl showed that Fincher could gracefully handle a thriller that is full of salacious, unexpected and borderline insane turns. Whether it was because of his relative inexperience as a narrative filmmaker at the time of its release or just poor writing, his first crack with material of that nature didn't go nearly as well. The Game squanders a strong start that is full of Fincher's signature tension/narrative misdirection with a flurry of convoluted plot twists and a truly awful climactic reveal that cheapens the entire mystery that drives the plot.

Most Underrated: The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (2011)

English language remakes often get killed on principle in film nerd circles and there have been some cases in recent years (Oldboy, The Upside) where the American versions fell short of the quality of the subtitled original. Then there are instances like with Fincher's version of the Swedish mystery thriller The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo where the quality is the same, if not better as the initial film. Fincher's gift for creating tense, haunting atmospheres made him the perfect director to bring this bleak yet compelling slow burn of a story to a wider audience and the astonishing work Rooney Mara does as Lisbeth Salander-the hacker protagonist with a traumatic past-has a layer of visible emotional anguish beneath the character's stoic intensity that Noomi Rapace's more widely lauded performance simply didn't have.

Most Overrated: Zodiac (2007)

Zodiac is a smart, well-acted mystery thriller that does a good job of introducing the lore of perhaps the most notorious serial killer in American history to unfamiliar audiences, I'm just not onboard with the increasingly popular take that it's one of the best movies of the past 20 years. Its 157-minute runtime is kind of hard to justify considering the several pockets of narrative dead air that arise throughout and while inevitable considering that the identity of the Zodiac has never been discovered, the ambiguous ending is a letdown after spending 2.5 hours watching people dedicate their lives to figuring out who was responsible for the killings.

An Entire Paragraph Gushing About Gone Girl:

While truly excellent films tend to emerge at least a few times every year, it's not very often that something floors you to the point where it renders you speechless. The last time this phenomenon occurred to me was a little over six years ago when I saw Gone Girl in theaters on opening night. Making a project that succeeds as a twisty mystery thriller and a wide-ranging satire requires smart writing, confident directing and dynamic acting to pull off and the efforts of the individuals responsible for helping pull off this delicate balancing act can not be undersold. Gillian Flynn's script is immensely detailed and completely unpredictable, Fincher manufactures a feeling of uneasiness that maximizes the effectiveness of the frequent game-changing revelations this story offers up and the acting of everyone from leads Rosamund Pike and Ben Affleck down to the small supporting players such as Kim Dickens, Casey Wilson and Tyler Perry couldn't have possibly been any better.

Week 11 Fantasy Football Winners and Losers: 2020 Edition

Quarterback
MVP: Deshaun Watson (Texans)

A Patriots team that was just starting to build confidence ran into a buzzsaw this week in the form of peak Watson. The Texans QB put together an absolute gem of a performance against a defense that had looked pretty good in recent weeks-throwing for 344 YDS and 2 TD's while adding another 36 YDS and TD on the ground. Watson has overcome a slow start and poor supporting cast on both sides of the ball to put forth another incredible season and will look to keep rolling against a soft Lions defense on Thanksgiving.

Honorable Mentions: Justin Herbert (Chargers), Jared Goff (Rams), Taysom Hill (Saints)

LVP: Matt Ryan (Falcons)

Julio Jones' absence for most of the game along with the Saints resurgent defense teeing off on him was a very bad formula for Ryan-who finished with 232 YDS, 0 TD's and 2 INT's in another rough loss for the Falcons. Even if Jones' hamstring issue holds him out, Ryan should be able to rebound in Week 12 against a putrid Raiders secondary.

Dishonorable Mentions: Tom Brady (Buccaneers), Lamar Jackson (Ravens), Matthew Stafford (Lions)

Running Back

MVP: Dalvin Cook (Vikings)

While it was a modest performance (160 scrimmage YDS, TD and a lost fumble on 32 touches) in comparison to the complete eviscerations of the Lions and Packers he put together earlier this month, Cook's strong showing against the Cowboys allowed him to return to the top of the RB leaderboards a week after being effectively shut down by the Bears. 2020's Fantasy Football MVP has a date with the Panthers improving, but still not very good rush D next.

Honorable Mentions: Clyde Edwards-Helaire (Chiefs), Derrick Henry (Titans), Melvin Gordon (Broncos)

LVP: Duke Johnson (Texans)

On a day where everyone from starters in Brandin Cooks and Will Fuller down to scarcely-used backups like Jordan Akins and Keke Coutee were contributing for the Texans offense, Johnson was seemingly the only one left out of the fun. The interim starting running back got stuffed on every handoff (10 CAR/15 YDS) and only added 3 catches for 20 YDS in his traditional checkdown role in the passing game. Johnson will once again be a volatile RB3/FLEX play against the Lions terrible defense.
Dishonorable Mentions: Ronald Jones (Buccaneers), Todd Gurley (Falcons), Adrian Peterson (Lions)

Wide Receiver

MVP: Adam Thielen (Vikings)

A week after getting outshined by Justin Jefferson in Chicago, Thielen reminded the promising rookie that he's still the top wideout on the team by dominating the Cowboys poor secondary for 123 YDS and 2 TD's on 8 catches. Unfortunately, Thielen was added to the COVID list yesterday (seemingly as a close contact, not a positive test), so his status for Week 12 is up in the air for now.

Honorable Mentions: Keenan Allen (Chargers), Robert Woods (Rams), Tyreek Hill (Chiefs)

LVP: Marquise Brown (Ravens)

Brown's brutal 2020 campaign arguably hit a new low on Sunday when he no-showed in a prime matchup against a banged-up Titans secondary- failing to secure any of his 3 targets in a tough OT loss for the struggling Ravens. While Lamar Jackson's poor passing season certainly hasn't helped his development in year 2, Brown's habit of dropping passes and struggling to get open has made him a difficult guy to trust in an offense that is starving for reliable pass-catchers outside of Mark Andrews. For now, he shouldn't be started and deserves to be viewed as a prospective drop candidate in 10-team leagues.

Dishonorable Mentions: Jarvis Landry (Browns), Tee Higgins (Bengals), Travis Fulgham (Eagles)

Tight End

MVP: Travis Kelce (Chiefs)

I honestly should just start penciling Kelce's name into this spot before the games are even played. The Raiders were the latest team to be victimized by the All-Pro-who posted 8 catches for 127 YDS and a way too easy game-winning TD. Anybody who took Kelce early in the draft has been treated to even better than usual production from the future HOF'er and is probably at the very least in the title hunt because of it.

Honorable Mentions: Mark Andrews (Ravens), Darren Waller (Raiders), Dallas Goedert (Eagles)

LVP: Hayden Hurst (Falcons)

Hurst has needed Matt Ryan to be really cooking to produce this season, so it's not particularly shocking that he put up a goose egg in what was arguably the worst game of the year for his quarterback so far. A bad Raiders defense will give Hurst a great chance to get back in the good graces of his fantasy owners.

Dishonorable Mentions: Rob Gronkowski (Buccaneers), Logan Thomas (Washington Football Team), Jared Cook (Saints)

Defense/Special Teams

MVP: Browns

A streaming option that actually delivered in 2020? Say it ain't so! The Browns generally average-to-below-average defense was treated to all of the joys of playing against the sloppy, often bonehead Eagles offense as they secured 5 sacks, 2 INT's (including a crucial pick 6 early in the game), FUM REC and a safety in their 24-17 victory on Sunday. They'll be on the streaming radar again in Week 12 when they take on the stumbling Jaguars

Honorable Mentions: Steelers, Saints, Washington Football Team

LVP: Patriots

It's not like a Bill Belichick-coached team to fail to exploit an opponent's weakness, but that's exactly what happened on Sunday. The Pats failed to secure a sack or a takeaway in their 27-20 loss to the Texans, despite Houston being without left tackle (and only reliable offensive lineman) Laremy Tunsil. This surprisingly up-and-down group won't be a viable starting option against a dynamic Cardinals offense in Week 12.

Dishonorable Mentions: Buccaneers, Vikings, Ravens

Amy Adams Ranked

Welcome to the latest edition of "Ranked"-where I rank a franchise or filmography from worst to best and hand out related accolades. This week, I'm profiling the work of Amy Adams-whose latest project "Hillbilly Elegy" hits Netflix tomorrow.

Amy Adams' Filmography Ranked:

21.Man of Steel (D)

20.Sunshine Cleaning (C-)

19.Julie & Julia (C)

18.Junebug (C+)

17.Batman v. Superman: Dawn of Justice (B-)

16.The Muppets (B-)

15.Charlie Wilson's War (B)

14.Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (B)

13.Nocturnal Animals (B)

12.Big Eyes (B+)

11.Trouble with the Curve (B+)

10.Justice League (B+)

9.Catch Me If You Can (B+)

8.Her (B+)

7.Drop Dead Gorgeous (B+)

6.Vice (A-)

5.Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby (A-)

4.Doubt (A-)

3.Arrival (A-)

2.The Fighter (A)

1.American Hustle (A)

Top Dog: American Hustle (2013)

Slick writing, infectious energy and a magnificent acting ensemble (Christian Bale, Adams, Bradley Cooper, Jennifer Lawrence, Jeremy Renner, Michael Pena, Robert De Niro) makes American Hustle a brilliant crime drama that ranks near the top of David O. Russell's terrific filmography.

Lowlight: Man of Steel (2013)

Re-releasing Catwoman would've been the only way the DCU could've got off to a worse start than it did with Man of Steel. With its combination of glacial pacing, needlessly chaotic action sequences and acting that is either stiff to the point where it appears rigor mortis has set in (Henry Cavill, Adams, Diane Lane) or unfittingly over-the-top (Michael Shannon), Zack Snyder's first (and only solo) Superman film is a boring, catastrophically messy disaster that flirts with hitting the rock bottom of the superhero genre.

Most Overrated: Julie & Julia (2009)

While there's certainly some enjoyment to be had in watching Meryl Streep's uncanny Julia Child impression, it's not enough to propel Julia & Julia out of its deep-rooted mediocrity. The late Nora Ephron's swan song aims to weave together the stories of Child's rise from bored housewife of a US diplomat (Stanley Tucci) to culinary icon and a New York-based call center worker (Adams) who re-discovers her passion for writing after starting a blog that details her journey cooking her way through Child's The Art of French Cooking over the course of a year, but only the portions with Child are consistently engaging-leaving this as an uneven and overlong biopic that misses its heartwarming target.

Most Underrated: Doubt (2008)

I'd argue that Doubt is one of the most overlooked films of the past 20 years. This adaptation of the Tony Award winning-play uses its understated direction and performances from its tiny cast (Meryl Streep, Phillip Seymour Hoffmann, Adams, Viola Davis) to craft a complex, morally ambiguous story about an alleged sexual assault by a priest at a Bronx Catholic School in the 1960's that offers no clean or easy answers about the innerworkings of the Catholic Church or the incident itself.

Top Cult Classic: Drop Dead Gorgeous (1999)

Beauty pageants are the perfect target for a mockumentary and Drop Dead Gorgeous hits the bullseye with ease. By deeply committing to skewering the ruthlessness, superficiality and abundant absurdity that defines the subculture, the writer/director team of Michael Patrick Jann and Lona Williams are able to craft a pitch black satire that uses its heightened real world observations to fuel a smart, bitingly hilarious comedy that was practically readymade for passionate niche audiences.

Most Inexplicable Faceplant: Sunshine Cleaning (2008)

How does one waste the talent of Adams and Emily Blunt? Cast them in a charmless indie dramedy of course! Sunshine Cleaning is a product of the post-Garden State indie wave where quirky melodramas that dealt with "taboo subjects" like mental illness or teen pregnancy were the hottest shit on the scene and while its never as insufferable as Zack Braff's Hall of Fame pseudo-intellectual circle jerk, its clumsy commentary on handling the suicide of a loved one and unmemorable characters make it a relatively miserable watch.

2020 NBA Free Agency: Top 10 Players Available

After last year's monumental free agency period, it's understandable that the impending start (tampering period starts tomorrow at 6:00 PM EST, signings can become official on Sunday starting at 12:01 PM EST) of the headlining act of the NBA offseason feels unusually free of major stakes. There's no franchise-altering superstars or even true max deals to be had for anyone that's not a lock to go back to where they played last season. However, what we do have hitting the open market is a very deep collection of role players of different ages and skill sets. While signing somebody like Davis Bertans or Jerami Grant may lack the visceral excitement of landing Kawhi Leonard or LeBron James, these are the type of players that often help quietly shift the balance of power throughout the entire league. Here are the 10 guys that I believe should be the most sought after in the 2020 free agency class.

Note: Players who are expected to re-sign with their current team (Anthony Davis, Brandon Ingram) or have a pending player option (Gordon Hayward, Enes Kanter, Javale McGee) have been excluded from inclusion.

10.Jordan Clarkson, shooting guard (2019-20 teams: Cleveland Cavaliers/Utah Jazz)

While Clarkson might not be on the level of Lou Williams or Jamal Crawford, he's a classic spark scorer off the bench who can hit shots from anywhere on the floor with solid efficiency and reliably produce 13-18 points in 22-25 minutes per game.

Possible Destinations: Utah Jazz, Memphis Grizzlies, Dallas Mavericks, Minnesota Timberwolves, Phoenix Suns, Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, Charlotte Hornets, New York Knicks

9.Serge Ibaka, power forward/center (2019-20 team: Toronto Raptors)

Ibaka has done a terrific job of altering his game to adapt to the modern NBA by developing a reliable outside shot without totally abandoning his roots as a defensive virtuoso who can cause problems in the paint with his physicality. That old school meets new school hybrid game paired with his loads of playoff experience should allow him to attract a busy market among contenders.

Possible Destinations: Toronto Raptors, Miami Heat, Los Angeles Lakers, Los Angeles Clippers, Boston Celtics

8.Christian Wood, power forward/center (2019-20 team: Detroit Pistons)

There's no denying that Wood is the biggest question mark among the top free agents. He's bounced around the league since he signed with the 76ers as an undrafted free agent ahead of 2015-16 season and wasn't able to stick on an NBA roster full time until he signed with the Pistons last offseason. Despite his relative inexperience in the pros, Wood flashed dynamic athleticism and legit floor-stretching ability at the 4/5 spot (particularly after he was inserted into the starting lineup following the Andre Drummond trade) all year long that indicates he could very well be on the cusp of turning into a Pascal Siakam/Domantas Sabonis-type force.

Possible Destinations: Detroit Pistons, Boston Celtics, Denver Nuggets, Atlanta Hawks, Dallas Mavericks, New York Knicks, Houston Rockets, Oklahoma City Thunder

7.Danilo Gallinari, small/power forward (2019-20 team: Oklahoma City Thunder)

While his well-documented durability concerns are now heightened even further at 32, Gallinari's positional versatility, lethal shooting stroke and solid defense should make him an excellent sixth man as he stares down the final act of his career.

Possible Destinations: Brooklyn Nets, Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors, Boston Celtics, Dallas Mavericks, Phoenix Suns, Philadelphia 76ers

6.Joe Harris, small forward (2019-20 team: Brooklyn Nets)

Outside shooting is the single most important thing in the NBA right now and Harris is an elite sniper from range that could help boost a number of bubble teams into full blow contenders.

Possible Destinations: Brooklyn Nets, Atlanta Hawks, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Clippers, New York Knicks, Utah Jazz, Los Angeles Lakers, Portland Trail Blazers, Detroit Pistons

5.Jerami Grant, small/power forward (2019-20 team: Denver Nuggets)

Grant's offense has finally caught up with his defense over the past few seasons and at just 26, there's no reason to believe that his diverse scoring arsenal won't expand further over the length of this deal he's about to ink.

Possible Destinations: Denver Nuggets, Miami Heat, Washington Wizards, Dallas Mavericks, Charlotte Hornets, New York Knicks, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks

4.Goran Dragic, point guard (2019-20 team: Miami Heat)

One of the biggest takeaways from the Heat's improbable Finals run in the Bubble was the revelation that Dragic still has plenty of gas left in the tank. He's a reliable playmaker who is willing to pass or score depending on the game situation and is equally effective as a starter or off the bench. That type of versatility and unselfishness is incredibly rare in the modern NBA, which should makes Dragic a sneakily coveted asset.

Possible Destinations: Miami Heat, Los Angeles Clippers, Los Angeles Lakers, Milwaukee Bucks, Denver Nuggets

3.Davis Bertans, power forward (2019-20 team: Washington Wizards)

Bertans was the top deadline target for contenders last season and that enthusiasm likely hasn't dampened at all 9 months later. The Latvian Laser has gotten better every single year he's been in the league and has turned him into a premiere offensive threat with the rare size/unlimited shooting range combo that opponents often have no answer for.

Possible Destinations: Washington Wizards, Miami Heat, Denver Nuggets, Charlotte Hornets, Boston Celtics, Los Angeles Lakers, New York Knicks, Oklahoma City Thunder

2.Montrezl Harrell, power forward/center (2019-20 team: Los Angeles Clippers)

A poor playoff performance isn't likely to prevent the 26-year old Harrell from getting his first massive payday. He's a defensive menace with a deceptively strong scoring touch that brings energy, athleticism and a willingness to handle any assignment to the floor every single night.

Possible Destinations: Los Angeles Clippers, Miami Heat, Toronto Raptors, Denver Nuggets, Charlotte Hornets, Houston Rockets, New Orleans Pelicans, Dallas Mavericks, Boston Celtics

1.Fred VanVleet, point/shooting guard (2019-20 team: Toronto Raptors)

Guards who can play both spots, create their own shot, distribute and play sound defense are like unicorns-particularly when they're still a couple years away from hitting their prime. Expect any team with the cap space and an unsettled backcourt to make a legit push to try and lure VanVleet away from Toronto.

Possible Destinations: Toronto Raptors, Atlanta Hawks, New York Knicks, Denver Nuggets, Sacramento Kings, Detroit Pistons, Houston Rockets, New Orleans Pelicans

Week 10 Fantasy Football Winners and Losers: 2020 Edition

 Quarterback

MVP: Tom Brady (Buccaneers)

A huge bounceback after last week's historic faceplant was essentially a lock for Brady. He diced up the Panthers youth-driven defense with ease-throwing for 341 YDS and 3 TD's while also adding a TD Run from the goal line. The Rams sneakily excellent defense await Brady next week.

Honorable Mentions: Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers), Kyler Murray (Cardinals), Josh Allen (Bills)

LVP: Jared Goff (Rams)

Not too many QB's who throw for over 300 YDS (302 to be exact) and only turn the ball over once (a lost fumble) end up in the least valuable player section, but Goff failure to reach the endzone in an otherwise pretty productive game against the Seahawks horrid defense earned him this unfortunate distinction. Goff is arguably the most aggravating useable QB in all of fantasy and his truly unpredictable output on a week-to-week basis will continue to keep him on the start/sit fringe. He'll be on the sit end of the equation in Week 11 when the Buccaneers physical, blitz-happy defense comes to LA.

Dishonorable Mentions: Russell Wilson (Seahawks), Joe Burrow (Bengals), Carson Wentz (Eagles)

Running Back

MVP: Alvin Kamara (Saints)

Once again, the electric playmaking wizardry of Kamara bailed out a Saints offense that was otherwise startlingly unproductive. The veteran back put up 98 scrimmage YDS (15 rushing, 83 receiving) and 3 TD's on just 15 touches in a victory. Even with Drew Brees out indefinitely, Kamara should continue to sit atop the weekly RB rankings.

Honorable Mentions: Josh Jacobs (Raiders), Ronald Jones (Buccaneers), D'Andre Swift (Lions)

LVP: Leonard Fournette (Buccaneers)

Heading into this week, all signs seemed to be pointing to Fournette taking over for Ronald Jones in the RB1A slot of the Bucs committee. Then Forunette got completely stuffed against the Panthers (30 scrimmage YDS on 10 touches) while Jones ran for nearly 200 YDS and a TD. While he's still worth rostering (for now), Fournette should stay out of lineups unless you're in absolutely dire straits at RB.

Dishonorable Mentions: James Conner (Steelers), Duke Johnson (Texans), Jonathan Taylor (Colts)

Wide Receiver

MVP: DeAndre Hopkins (Cardinals)

Week 10 was nothing but W's for the best wideout in the league. In addition to making one of the greatest catches in league history to clinch an improbable Cardinals win over the Bills, his 7 REC/127 YDS/1 TD line put him atop the receiver leaderboard. Expect more good things to happen for D-Hop in Week 12 when he goes up against a wretched Seahawks secondary that he lit up for 10 catches/103 YDS/1 TD in their earlier meeting this season.

Honorable Mentions: Diontae Johnson (Steelers), Chase Claypool (Steelers), Marvin Jones Jr. (Lions)

LVP: A.J. Brown (Titans)

Brown was in line for a dud after scoring in 5 straight games and his 1 REC/21 YD performance against the Colts certainly qualified as that. He'd been superb regardless of matchup since returning from injury in Week 5 prior to this misstep and it wouldn't be at all surprising if he returned to form against a tough Ravens secondary in Week 11.
Dishonorable Mentions: D.K. Metcalf (Seahawks), Michael Thomas (Saints), Travis Fulgham (Eagles)

Tight End

MVP: Rob Gronkowski (Buccaneers)

Everybody was eating well in the Bucs receiving corps on Sunday and Gronkowski got his time to shine even with a low target share (3)-securing 2 catches for 51 YDS and a TD. Gronk will remain a boom-or-bust TE1 against the Rams in Week 11.

Honorable Mentions: Hunter Henry (Chargers), Logan Thomas (Washington Football Team), Mark Andrews (Ravens)

LVP: Jared Cook (Saints)

As I mentioned earlier, the entire Saints offense aside from Kamara was terrible on Sunday against the 49ers. Cook's no show arguably topped the list-as he failed to catch either of his targets on a day where Drew Brees and Jameis Winston combined for just 129 YDS through the air. Things should be trending up for Cook and the rest of the Saints pass catchers as they enter a very soft portion of their schedule (Broncos, Falcons x2, Browns, Eagles) with the potential of the notorious gunslinger Winston taking over for Brees for at least the next few games.

Dishonorable Mentions: T.J. Hockenson (Lions), Austin Hooper (Browns), Evan Engram (Giants)

Defense/Special Teams
MVP: Saints

A large part of the reason the Saints offense could get away with being so ineffective and still come away with a win is because the defense balled out for a 2nd straight week. Dennis Allen's group got 2 sacks and 4 takeways (2 INT's, 2 FUM REC's) while allowing just 13 points against a depleted 49ers offense that seems to be getting sloppier by the week. They'll look to keep their hotstreak going against a Falcons offense that hasn't surrendered a ton of fantasy points to opposing defenses of late (8 sacks, 4 turnovers, 22-40 points scored in their last 4 games).

Honorable Mentions: Steelers, Bears, Colts

LVP: Ravens

The feared Ravens group that has teed off on the Colts, Bengals and Eagles in recent weeks didn't make it to Foxboro for Sunday Night Football-getting 1 sack, 0 takeaways and allowing 23 points to a vulnerable Patriots offense. They'll be a questionable play in Week 11 against a Titans offense that doesn't turn the ball over much or allow a lot of sacks.

Dishonorable Mentions: Eagles, Titans, Chargers

Kristen Stewart Ranked

Welcome to the latest edition of "Ranked"-where I rank a franchise or filmography from worst to best and hand out related accolades. This week, I'm profiling the work of Kristen Stewart-whose latest project "Happiest Season" debuts on Hulu on November 25th.

Kristen Stewart's Filmography Ranked:

13.Snow White and the Huntsman (C)

12.JT Leroy (C+)

11.Panic Room (C+)

10.Still Alice (B-)

9.Charlie's Angels (B)

8.Jumper (B)

7.Seberg (B)

6.Camp X-Ray (B)

5.Underwater (B)

4.Cafe Society (B)

3.Billy Lynn's Long Halftime Walk (B)

2.Adventureland (B)

1.American Ultra (B+)

Top Dog: American Ultra (2015)

A stoner comedy meets legitimately sweet romance meets frantic, bloody action movie had the potential to be a historic mess, but thanks to a game cast and the surprisingly organic blending of its vastly different genre ingredients, American Ultra ends up being a unique, awesome ride that ranks among the 2010's best B movies.

Lowlight: Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

If mediocrity had a physical form, it might look like Snow White and the Huntsman. Tremendous visual effects and a reliably charismatic turn from Chris Hemsworth as the Huntsman get canceled out by a pair of abysmal performances on polar opposite ends of the emotional acting spectrum (a mannequin-esque Stewart as Snow White, a shamelessly overacting Charlize Theron as the evil Queen Ravenna) and a script that never convincingly sells the darker version of this classic story.

Most Underrated: Underwater (2020)

William Eubank's sci-fi horror flick finally saw the light of day in January nearly three years after it completed filming and it once again proved that a prolonged shelving doesn't always spell doom for a movie's quality. Through its brisk storytelling and claustrophobic, dimly-lit submarine/ocean floor settings, Underwater establishes itself as a tense, atmospheric thriller that never lets up over the course of its very efficient 95-minute runtime.

Most Overrated: Still Alice (2014)

Still Alice is a classic case of great actors elevating middling material. Without the spirited efforts of Stewart, Alec Baldwin and particularly Julianne Moore-who received an Oscar for her work here- this would've been nothing more than a bland, soapy melodrama about a successful middle-aged woman succumbing to Alzheimer's and even with them, it's just a half decent "prestige" drama.

Best Example of Her Slept-On Acting Ability: Seberg (2019)

Like many biopics, Seberg is a compelling yet blatantly underdeveloped dramazation of a fascinating story (American actress Jean Seberg's involvement with civil rights activist Hakim Jamal and subsequent donations to groups like the NAACP and Black Panthers that made her a target in an illegal, covert FBI surveillance program known as COINTELPRO). That being said, a career-best turn from Stewart as Seberg makes the film's narrative shortcomings a lot easier to swallow. Stewart does a tremendous job of gradually detailing Seberg's tragic descent from respected, fearlessly confident global superstar to a paranoid, broken woman whose life and career are upended by the shady and downright evil actions of a government agency that went to extraordinary lengths to demonize anyone that was even somewhat prominently involved with the Civil Rights movement.

Biggest Reinforcement of the Perception That She's A Bad Actor: Snow White and the Huntsman (2012)

The Twilight franchise has perpetuated a narrative that Stewart is a robotic screen presence with no acting ability. Her first lead role post-Twilight wasn't exactly a compelling argument against that popular take. It was easy to question whether or not she was even fully awake during filming as she turned in a stiff performance as the reimagined warrior version of Snow White that was a big part of why this "gritty" live action reboot of the iconic fairy tale fell flat.

Popular Target of Right Wing Trolls That's Actually A Pretty Solid Movie: Charlie's Angels (2019)

The latest reboot of Charlie's Angels had the audacity to be more overtly feminist than the previous iterations, so naturally this made it open season for right wing clowns who view women trying to empower other women as a lethal threat to the sanctity of their worldview (if you're in a self-loathing mood, head over to IMDb and read some of the dozens of rage-fueled 1-star reviews). While I'm not going to pretend like Charlie's Angels is some kind of a revelatory entry into the cinematic space or that it doesn't have very notable problems (the attempts at humor are largely weak and the villains all kind of stink) that hold it back, its a perfectly competent action flick with a lot of energy, solid fight scenes and well-matched leads (Stewart, Naomi Scott, Ella Balinska) that do a good job of selling this iteration's versions of the Angels as colleagues put together by chance whose relationships slowly blossoms into a strong friendship as the story unfolds.

Vince Vaughn Ranked

Welcome to the latest edition of "Ranked"-where I rank a franchise or filmography from worst to best and hand out related accolades. This week, I'm profiling the work of Vince Vaughn-whose latest project "Freaky" hits theaters on Friday and on demand video services on December 4th.

Vince Vaughn's Filmography Ranked:

21.Be Cool (F)

20.The Dilemma (D+)

19.Mr. and Mrs. Smith (C)

18.Wake Up, Ron Burgundy (B-)

17.Unfinished Business (B-)

16.Clay Pigeons (B-)

15.The Lost World: Jurassic Park (B-)

14.Delivery Man (B-)

13.Swingers (B-)

12.Fighting with My Family (B)

11.The Internship (B)

10.The Watch (B)

9.The Binge (B)

8.Brawl in Cell Block 99 (B)

7.Starsky & Hutch (B+)

6.Wedding Crashers (B+)

5.Old School (B+)

4.Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story (B+)

3.Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (A-)

2.Hacksaw Ridge (A-)

1.Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (A+)

Top Dog: Anchorman: The Legend of Ron Burgundy (2004)

Anchorman is a high watermark for comedy that has aged impeccably. Only a handful of movies can compete with the level of wall-to-wall hilarity, inspired stupidity and massive smiles that this classic '70s news satire delivers in 90 minutes. Everyone involved should take pride in the role they played in birthing this valuable contribution to the world of comedy for the rest of their careers.

Lowlight: Be Cool (2005)

Be Cool is a crime against cinema that should be burned from whatever databases it still exists on. No comedy that I've ever laid eyes upon has served as a bigger insult to jokes or the cathartic act of laughing than this remarkably star-studded (John Travolta, Uma Thurman, Harvey Keitel, Dwayne Johnson, Vaughn, Cedric the Entertainer, Danny DeVito, Andre Benjamin) pile of overwhelmingly pungent manure.

Most Underrated: Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues (2013)

I strongly believe that the relatively significant degree of venom Anchorman 2: The Legend Continues was met with upon its release is unwarranted. Considering the 9-year layoff and rare legacy the original built, Anchorman 2 went about as well as it possibly could've. All of the returning cast eagerly dove back into their iconic characters, the signature gleefully absurd humor remained in tact and the laugh/quotable dialogue ratio wasn't too far from the original. Sounds like the right formula for a worthwhile comedy continuation to me.

Most Overrated: Swingers (1996)

Swingers is a fine enough raunchy buddy comedy that was integral in launching the careers of both Vaughn and Jon Favreau. However, the whole time I was watching it, I couldn't help but view it as nothing more than a 90's version of Entourage with a collection of less amusing and entertaining  loudmouth douchebags.

Best Dramatic Effort: Brawl in Cell Block 99 (2017)

Vaughn is very much like Adam Sandler in that he's a comedic actor that has an almost secret knack for delivering outstanding dramatic performances. His signature moment in this space came in the prison action thriller Brawl in Cell Block 99. As an imprisoned drug mule who is blackmailed into performing a string of murders by the same treacherous cartel members that landed him behind bars, Vaughn does a masterful job of slowly turning into a ruthless, deranged monster that's awakened by a brutal culture of  violence that drives the barbaric maximum security prison he's locked up in.

Biggest Mess: The Dilemma (2011)

Ron Howard is as hit-or-miss as any director working today and The Dilemma is very high on his list of whiffs. Howard wastes the respectable enough buddy rapport of Vaughn and Kevin James on an overlong movie that frequently weaves between clashing genres (slapstick comedy/dark comedy/relationship-based melodrama) with zero confidence or cohesion.

Week 9 Fantasy Football Winners and Losers: 2020 Edition

 Quarterback

MVP: Kyler Murray (Cardinals)

While he may have come out on the wrong side of a riveting shootout with the Dolphins, Murray was able to narrowly outduel Josh Allen, Patrick Mahomes and Aaron Rodgers for the title of Week 9's top fantasy QB. He did ample damage with his arm (283 YDS/3 TD/0 INT) and legs (106 YDS/1 TD) in what was one of the most impressive performances of his young career to-date. Murray has made the leap many people expected from him in his sophomore season and should now be considered a top 5 QB option on a nearly weekly basis.

Honorable Mentions: Josh Allen (Bills), Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs), Aaron Rodgers (Packers)

LVP: Tom Brady (Buccaneers)

The biggest difference between 43-year old Tom Brady and his prime era is that he actually puts up really notable clunkers in his advanced age. Brady succumbed to the ineptitude of his mortal running mates in Tampa-displaying questionable decisionmaking and horrific touch on the football that resulted in a repulsive statline (206 YDS/0 TD's/ 3 INT's) all-time against a Saints team that needed overtime to beat the quickly sinking Bears last week. A stat sheet-stuffing explosion from Mr. Pliability against the Panthers next week wouldn't be at all surprising.

Dishonorable Mentions: Matthew Stafford (Lions), Lamar Jackson (Ravens), Ryan Tannehill (Titans)

Running Back

MVP: Dalvin Cook (Vikings)

Did the Lions even bother watching film from Cook's monster performance against the Packers?  Even if they did, the lessons from that tape study didn't translate to the field on Sunday because the Vikings back somehow managed to IMPROVE upon his earth-shattering Week 8 performance-picking up 252 scrimmage YDS (206 rushing, 46 receiving) and 2 TD's in another easy W for the Vikes. A Bears defense who just stuffed Derrick Henry for 4 quarters have the best possible chance (Translation: Decent, but far from a lock) of putting an end to Cook's absurd run of dominance.
Honorable Mentions: Christian McCaffery (Panthers), James Robinson (Jaguars), Josh Jacobs (Raiders)

LVP: James Conner (Steelers)

The undefeated Steelers trip to Dallas to take on a struggling Cowboys team that had ex-AFL signalcaller Garrett Gilbert under center was far less pleasant than expected and arguably no player had less fun in their narrow comeback victory than Conner. The 4th year pro was completely bottled up by the lowly Cowboys defense-registering just 20 yards on 11 touches. Despite this unexpected faceplant, Conner's status as a low-end RB1 remains in tact heading into a plus Week 10 matchup with the Bengals.
Dishonorable Mentions: Ronald Jones (Buccaneers), JaMycal Hasty (49ers), David Montgomery (Bears)

Wide Receiver

MVP: Tyreek Hill (Chiefs)

It was another overwhelmingly pass-happy game for the Chiefs against the Panthers on Sunday, so naturally their top wideout had another strong performance. Hill put up season-highs in both catches (9) and YDS (113) while hauling in 2 TD's for a 2nd consecutive game. Hill has been one of the most consistent top-end fantasy receivers of 2020 thus far and considering the Chiefs enhanced focus on the pass in recent weeks, that status will likely hold up when the Chiefs return to action in Week 11 against the Raiders.

Honorable Mentions: Davante Adams (Packers), D.K. Metcalf (Seahawks), D.J. Chark Jr. (Jaguars)

LVP: DeAndre Hopkins (Cardinals)

It was a stunningly quiet game for Hopkins in a plus matchup with the Dolphins as he was only targeted 3 times- all of which of were caught for a grand total of 30 YDS- while Kyler Murray turned to Christian Kirk and Larry Fitzgerald to lead the charge in the passing game. Hopkins will look to get back on track against the Tre'Davious White-led Bills secondary on Sunday.

Dishonorable Mentions: D.J. Moore (Panthers), Corey Davis (Titans), Adam Thielen (Vikings)

Tight End

MVP: Travis Kelce (Chiefs)

Only the Chiefs could make having a pair of 100+ YD receivers in the same game feel like business as usual. While Kelce failed to find the endzone, he did lead the team in receptions (10) and YDS (159) for the 2nd consecutive game. Kelce is just ridiculous and with George Kittle sidelined indefinitely, no one at this position can even touch him right now.

Honorable Mentions: Jimmy Graham (Bears), Evan Engram (Giants), T.J. Hockenson (Lions)

LVP: Rob Gronkowski (Buccaneers)

Gronkowski wasn't afforded the same luxury that Mike Evans and Chris Godwin received in the form of getting just enough garbage time yards to avoid the absolute bottom of the fantasy barrel-finishing with just 1 catch for 2 YDS in the Bucs heinous loss to the Saints. This is Gronk's first dud since Week 4 against the Chargers, so he'll continue to be weekly starting option for now at this always fun to manage position.

Dishonorable Mentions: Robert Tonyan (Packers), Jared Cook (Saints), Mark Andrews (Ravens)

Defense/Special Teams

MVP: Saints

Congrats to every single dice-rolling S.O.B. that started the Saints D this week. This well below average group came out of nowhere to completely terrorize the Bucs upstart offense-picking up 3 sacks and 3 INT's in a 31-3 victory. Feel free to fire them up for their Week 10 tilt with the Nick Mullens-led 49ers that might also be without top playmakers Deebo Samuel, Raheem Mostert and Brandon Aiyuk once again.

Honorable Mentions: Ravens, Titans, Giants

LVP: Chiefs

The up-and-down Panthers offense gave the Chiefs D more than they bargained for as they surrendered 31 points while only registering 2 sacks and 0 takeaways in a narrow victory on Sunday afternoon. This group will always be trick or treat, but despite the degree of volatility that's attached to them, they'll be worth rostering for a stretch run that includes solid matchups with the Broncos, Falcons and Dolphins.

Dishonorable Mentions: Patriots, Cardinals, 49ers

2020 NFL Mid-Season Awards+Updated Playoff Predictions

MVP: Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs)

I firmly believed Russell Wilson was a lock for this honor all season long, but it's hard to argue that he's still the frontrunner a day after logging his 2nd 3+ turnover game in the last 3 weeks. Mahomes, on the other hand, has played steady (2+ TD's in 8 of 9 games), nearly mistake-free football (1 INT and 1 FUM Lost in 9 games) that has the Chiefs' prospects of repeating as Super Bowl Champions looking very strong at the moment.

Honorable Mentions: Russell Wilson (Seahawks), Aaron Rodgers (Packers), Aaron Donald (Rams)

Top Offensive Player: Alvin Kamara (Saints)

The Saints offense has been a revolving door thus far with everyone from Michael Thomas to Emmanuel Sanders to Jared Cook missing varying degrees of time. Kamara has not only taken advantage of that lack of stability and depth in the supporting cast, he's thriving even more than usual because of it-registering 1,046 scrimmage YDS and 8 TD's on 156 touches, and bringing much-needed explosive playmaking to an otherwise merely methodical group.

Honorable Mentions: Dalvin Cook (Vikings), Derrick Henry (Titans) , Davante Adams (Packers)

Top Defensive Player: Aaron Donald (Rams)

Huge surprise right? Donald continues to solidify his standing as one of, if not the single most dominant defensive lineman in NFL history by shrugging off the extra attention he receives from opposing offenses and blowing up games in spectacular fashion (9 sacks, 7 TFL's, 15 QB hits, 22 QB pressures, 3 forced fumbles) week in and week out.

Honorable Mentions: T.J. Watt (Steelers), Jaire Alexander (Packers), Khalil Mack (Bears)

Top Offensive Rookie: Joe Burrow (Bengals)

Their win/loss record may not reflect it just yet, but Burrow has already made a huge impact on the Bengals. The reigning #1 overall pick has overcome horrible offensive line play and an inconsistent running game to get off to a historically strong start for a rookie signalcaller (2,272 YDS including 5 300+ YD games, 67.0% CMP, 14 total TD's) that has allowed this largely talent-deprived team to be competitive in nearly every game.

Honorable Mentions: Justin Herbert (Chargers), Justin Jefferson (Vikings), James Robinson (Jaguars)

Top Defensive Rookie: Chase Young (Washington Football Team)

Don't let the relatively low sack total (3.5) fool you, Young has been every bit of the force off the edge he was expected to be in the earlygoing. In just 6 healthy games, he's been a frequent flyer around the line of scrimmage picking up 7 pressures, 5 TFL's, 4 QB hits and 20 tackles and is already beginning to pick up the type of attention from opponents that's typically reserved for feared veterans.

Honorable Mentions: Antoine Winfield Jr. (Buccaneers), Jaylon Johnson (Bears), Jeremy Chinn (Panthers)

Top Comeback Player: Ben Roethlisberger (Steelers)

Nobody knew how 38-year old Roethlisberger was going to look coming off a devastating elbow injury , but I doubt even serial optimists expected a start this strong. His newfound limitations as a deep passer have actually reformed him into a more accurate/less mistake prone QB (68.1 CMP%, 4 INT's) without completely stifling his tendency to put up huge numbers (1,934 YDS, 18 TD's in 8 games), which is a big reason why the Steelers have been on the right side of so many shootouts this season.

Honorable Mentions: Jason Verrett (49ers), Aldon Smith (Cowboys), Akiem Hicks (Bears)

Top Coach: Brian Flores (Dolphins)

Last year's 5-4 finish following a horrendous 0-7 start wasn't a fluke. Flores has instilled a level of toughness and resilience in his team that allows them to win in a variety of ways and that rare heart/discipline combination has them right in the thick of the playoff picture with the toughest part of their schedule already out of the way.

Honorable Mentions: Mike Tomlin (Steelers), Kliff Kingsbury (Cardinals), Sean McVay (Rams)

James Wan Ranked

Welcome to the latest edition of "Ranked"-where I rank a franchise or filmography from worst to best and hand out related accolades. This week, I'm profiling the work of veteran director James Wan.

James Wan's Filmography Ranked:

7.Death Sentence (D+)

6.Insidious (C-)

5.The Conjuring 2 (B-)

4.Saw (B)

3.The Conjuring (B+)

2.Aquaman (B+)

1.Furious 7 (A)

Top Dog: Furious 7 (2015)

Wan's first venture into the world of blockbuster filmmaking couldn't have possibly gone any better. He handled everything from the franchise's signature over-the-top action to the tragic mid-production death of star Paul Walker that caused the entire plot of the film to be re-framed with the utmost grace, which made Furious 7 a unique, moving standout in this long-running series.

Low Light: Death Sentence (2007)

With its legit tension and well-constructed mystery/horror hybrid narrative, Saw was a pretty impressive directorial debut for the then 26-year old Wan. The second of his pair of follow-up projects released in 2007 (the other being the long-forgotten marionette supernatural horror movie Dead Silence) was a steep regression that demonstrated just how green he still was. This vigilante action thriller's uneven pacing, cheesy dialogue and overly dramatic acting killed any chances it had of being a fun piece of trash entertainment.

Most Underrated: Aquaman (2018)

The start of the current potential DCU renaissance can be linked back to Aquaman. Wan set out to make an unapologetically cheesy fantasy adventure epic to introduce the masses to this much-maligned character that had been teased in a pair of earlier DCU entries (Batman v. Superman, Justice League) and everyone from the actors to the visual effects team fully committed to that vision and it shows in every frame of this remarkably well-made movie.

Most Overrated: Insidious (2011)

Whenever someone asks me to name an example of a movie that starts out strong and ends poorly, Insidious is always the first title out of my mouth. The first half of the movie does a great job of building a slowly intensifying atmosphere of dread before taking an abrupt turn to Trash City USA with a final stretch powered by cheap jump scares and outlandish, unintentionally hilarious plot developments.

Biggest Contribution to the Horror Movie Landscape: The Conjuring (2013)

This is a tough call because Wan has arguably done the most to shape the horror genre of any director since Wes Craven, but The Conjuring slightly edges out the rest of his work in terms of legacy. Not only did this terrific haunted house drama launch an entire universe of films and see Wan finally put together a fully cohesive project that built off the promise he showed in the past, its successful eerie atmosphere/jump scares/storytelling balance directly influenced an entire wave of similar movies (A Quiet Place, Lights Out, Oujia) and will likely continue to do so for generations to come.

Week 8 Fantasy Football Winners and Losers: 2020 Edition

 Quarterback

MVP: Patrick Mahomes (Chiefs)

After taking a backseat the past 2 weeks, Mahomes stepped back into the spotlight with his best game of 2020 thus far. He took full advantage of a pass-happy gameplan and shredded the hopeless Jets for 416 YDS and 5 TD's. A stinger than expected Panthers defense awaits Mahomes in Week 9.

Honorable Mentions: Russell Wilson (Seahawks), Aaron Rodgers (Packers), Matthew Stafford (Lions)

LVP: Josh Allen (Bills)

The Bills may have shook off the Patriots boogeyman for the 1st time in what seem like an eternity, but Allen did very little to contribute to this prideful W-finishing the day with only 177 scrimmage YDS, an INT and a rushing TD.  Allen has reverted back to his vintage frantic self over the past month after a fantastic start to the year and will more than likely remain a volatile starting option even in the best possible matchups like the one he has on deck against the abysmal Seahawks secondary.

Dishonorable Mentions: Carson Wentz (Eagles), Jared Goff (Rams), Teddy Bridgewater (Panthers)

Running Back

MVP: Dalvin Cook (Vikings)

Mike Zimmer probably needed to change his pants after Sunday's victory over the Packers. The Vikings essentially just handed Cook the ball for 4 quarters and let him work his magic against one of the league's most anemic run defenses-which resulted in him finishing the afternoon with 30 CAR/163 YDS/3 TD's. Another 50-YD score on a screen pass served as the cherry on top of this emphatic statement game. Cook has been incredible over the last 4 games he's been healthy and he should continue to eat as the Vikings look to claw their way back into the NFC playoff picture after a brutal 1-5 start to the year.

Honorable Mentions: Giovani Bernard (Bengals), Zack Moss (Bills), Derrick Henry (Titans)

LVP: Ronald Jones (Buccaneers)

Just when it appears like Jones has solidified himself as a productive workhorse back in a powerhouse offense, the volatility that has plagued the early stages of his career creeps back into the picture. He was borderline terrible against a poor Giants defense-managing just 46 scrimmage yards (23 rushing, 23 receiving) and a lost fumble on 11 touches in a narrow win for the Buccaneers. Despite this dud, Jones has soundly outplayed Leonard Fournette all season long and will be an RB2 for their week 9 matchup with the Saints.

Dishonorable Mentions: Jonathan Taylor (Colts), Clyde Edwards-Helaire (Chiefs), D'Andre Swift (Lions)

Wide Receiver

MVP: DK Metcalf (Seahawks)

Metcalf seemed to take his quiet Week 7 performance against the Cardinals personally and responded by scorching the 49ers for 4 quarters (12 REC/161 YDS/2 TD). The 2nd year wideout has emerged as an early fantasy MVP in 2020 and will look to keep up his absurd level of play against an ailing Bills secondary this Sunday.

Honorable Mentions: Davante Adams (Packers), Tyreek Hill (Chiefs), Robert Woods (Rams)

LVP: Amari Cooper (Cowboys)

Playing with a faceless jabroni otherwise known as Ben DiNucci at quarterback muddied up the prospects for all of the Cowboys receivers this week, but Cooper in particular felt the effects of having an overmatched stiff lineup under center as he secured just a single reception for 5 YDS on the night. Even with Andy Dalton presumably returning to the fold in Week 9, Cooper won't be a recommended play against a fierce Steelers defense.

Dishonorable Mentions: Dionate Johnson (Steelers), Adam Thielen (Vikings), Justin Jefferson (Vikings)

Tight End

MVP: Travis Kelce (Chiefs)

An explosive performance from Mahomes meant that all of his top targets got their opportunity to feast on those poor poor Jets. While Tyreek Hill was the lead dog in the TD department, Kelce led the pack in both receptions (8) and YDS (109) while also securing his own trip to the endzone. With George Kittle potentially missing the rest of the year with a foot injury, the overall TE1 belt now looks like it's going to be Kelce's to lose.

Honorable Mentions: Jared Cook (Saints), Eric Ebron (Steelers), Rob Gronkowski (Buccaneers)

LVP: Jimmy Graham (Bears)

So much for a big revenge game for Graham. He was sluggish and unfocused against his former employers in New Orleans-managing just 2 catches for 13 YDS despite several efforts from Nick Foles to get him involved in the offense. Despite performing better than expected given his age and supporting role in a horrid offense, Graham can be comfortably left on benches most weeks.

Dishonorable Mentions: Mike Gesicki (Dolphins), Jonnu Smith (Titans), Mark Andrews (Ravens)

Defense/Special Teams

MVP: Eagles

As expected, Jim Schwartz had this group teeing off on sacrificial lamb Ben DiNucci-securing 4 sacks, 2 FUM REC's, a safety and an absolutely bogus defensive score off one of those fumbles in a hilarious 23-9 victory over the floundering Cowboys. This mediocre group could be in line for another big performance when they return to action in Week 10 against a pass protection-challenged, turnover-prone Giants offense.

Honorable Mentions: Steelers, Colts, Chiefs

LVP: Titans

The Titans defense quite frankly sucks and their no show against the Bengals is just the latest display of the full scope of the stench they give off on this side of the ball. Not only did they not get any takeaways, but they failed to register a sack against one of the worst offensive lines in football in this 31-20 upset loss. Even with the poor Bears offense rolling into Nashville next week, they won't be a strong play.

Dishonorable Mentions: 49ers, Bears, Packers

Movie Review: Holidate

Take a look at the above poster for a second. Seems pretty obvious what type of movie Holidate will be right? The corny title/tagline and cutesy "dating is a drag!" looks from the actors seem to be teasing a  Hallmark-esque disgustingly sentimental Christmas romcom that would've likely starred Matthew McConaughey and Reese Witherspoon if it was made back in the genre's shameless cash cow era back in the early 2000's. Well, there's a reason why it's wrong to jump to premature conclusions about people or things kids because Holidate is a fun, proudly R-rated ride that subtly subverts the time-tested romantic comedy formula while honoring the best parts of it.

Holidate feels like the result of an experiment where a recent-ish cynical indie romcom like Sleeping with Other People or Destination Wedding was filtered through a palatable mainstream lens. In other words, it has enough of an edge that it doesn't feel like a fairy tale, but still sunny enough to retain the cheery bounce that people watch these movies for. This balance is evident in its plot which essentially boils down to fate bringing a pair of relatively snarky, selfish pricks together (Emma Roberts, Luke Bracey) to be each other's platonic date for holiday gatherings over the course of a year. Their shared contempt for the serial optimism/nagging of the people around them draws them closer together, the past relationship misfortunate that fuels their negative worldview that make them refuse to commit to a relationship and then when all seems lost, the happily ever ending comes in to wrap things up on a high after teetering between both sides of the "will they or won't they" coin for the previous 90 minutes. The structure remains very conventional at its core and the abundant chemistry between Roberts and Bracey remains the primary appeal of the project, but its little details such as an abrupt dismantling of a "someone new comes in and sweeps (insert party) off their feet" subplot and amusing, often obscene fakeouts when a groanworthy cliché moment appears to be on the horizon adds some unexpectedly flavorful notes that helps bolster the effectiveness of this traditional recipe.

Surprises that aren't rooted in some form of tragedy seem practically unattainable these days, so when something positively unexpected like an energetic, funny and pretty clever romantic comedy from the director of Big Momma's House 2 and co-writer of Nancy Drew comes along, it's a tiny blessing that has to be cherished for a moment or two. The best case scenario for this project seemed like it was going to be an underrated talent in Roberts slumming it in a mediocre, dated affair and it ended up being a very solidly crafted effort that's better than a good chunk of the romantic comedies that have been released in the past 5 years. Kudos to the Netflix romantic comedy machine for making this unexpected joy happen and may at least one of the next 25 algorithm-friendly eggs that hatches from it be at least as enjoyable as Holidate.
