At no point over the past 12 months did I feel like I was in the middle of a great year for movies. The number of titles that really impressed me wasn't notable and there were several months (January, May, August, September) where I was barely going to see anything in theaters because I had no issue with waiting until home video to see the titles that were playing. Then while I was starting to finalize this list earlier this week, I realized that 2018 was a very impressive year after all. Just about every genre that I love (action, drama, comedy, thriller, sc-fi, superhero, every imaginable B-movie variation) had multiple standout entries, the awards slate was more consistently strong than usual and there was only about 10-12 films that I found to be completely worthless.
