Movie Review: The Crazies

The Crazies is a remake of the cult 1973 horror flick(I had actually never heard of it untill the remake surfaced). Unlike most horror remakes this film was praised by the audience and critics alike. I had pretty much zero interest it before hearing all the postive feedback so I decided I would give it a go on DVD. I will agree it is better than most horror remakes(let's be honest that doesn't take much) but it is not anything special.
The plot focuses on a small town Ogden Marsh,Iowa. A series of strange events and behavior has been scaring and confusing Sheriff David Dutton(Timothy Olyphant) and Deputy Russell Clark(Joe Anderson). After the two lawmen make a disturbing discovery in the town lake all hell breaks loose. The townspeople slowly start becoming infected by a poisoned water supply that force everyone to become cold-blooded killers. The Sheriff and the Deputy along with the Sheriff's wife(Radha Mitchell) and one of the wife's employee's(Danielle Panabaker) go on the run and try to save the town. They are not only on the run from the infected townspeople they are also on the run from the millitary who is trying to cover up their mistake and destroy the entire town of Ogden Marsh.
The Crazies is just an average horror film. It really doesn't bring any new or exciting to the table. Granted I don't expect every horror film to do so especially a remake but a couple of curveballs would have been nice. Pretty much everything was middle of the road on this film. Acting, plot, directing, scares etc. The only things that were below average were the film relies way too heavily on jump scares. You can pretty much predict when something is going to pop out at all times. Seriously the only that is missing is something that pops out and says Boo! The only that I did enjoy about this film was the camerawork. The camerawork had a wide variety of angles and the director did a good job laying out his shots.
The Crazies is the definition of an average film. There really is nothing scary or good about it but there isn't much glaringly wrong with it either. The Crazies is basically a film that could do the job at 1:30 A.M. on HBO but outside of that its just alright.
2.5/5 Stars
