The Summer movie season is officially upon us! May, as usual, is mostly comprised of major tentpole films that sets the tone for the next 4 months in the world of cinema. Here are my thoughts on the entire slate of May films.
Films I want to see:
5.Now You See Me (5/31)-The idea of a magician heist movie is very original and intriguing to me. The cast including Jesse Eisenberg, Woody Harrelson, Morgan Freeman, Isla Fisher and Michael Caine is absolutely phenomenal. Hopefully it doesn't drop the ball with its cool concept.
4.The Hangover Part III (5/24)-Yes Part II wasn't as good as the first. Yes Part II was essentially the same concept as the first. That being said, Part II was still very amusing and more than enough to get me to want to spend another round with the wolf pack. The concept this go-round is a bit different as they don't get drunk and loose someone and the trailer is undoubtedly funny and looks a bit darker in it's humor than the other two installments. I'm very excited to see how Todd Philips decides to wrap-up this franchise.
3.Iron Man 3 (5/3)-Marvel again kicks off the summer movie season with Iron Man 3. Iron Man 2 was a bit disappointing after the excellent first installment, but I am pretty confident that writer/director Shane Black will get the franchise back on track. The early reception has been very positive and the film looks like it could be in the top tier of Marvel films.
2.Fast and Furious 6 (5/24)-Fast Five was easily the best of the franchise and was my 2nd favorite film of 2011. Coming off that triumph with the same writer and director in tow and a explosive trailer, Fast and Furious 6 has all the making of another potential top-notch action flick.
1.Star Trek: Into Darkness (5/17)-My most anticipated film of the entire summer. The initial remake came out of nowhere and blew me away and became one of my favorite films of all-time after multiple viewings. With J.J Abrams, screenwriters Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman and most of the cast still on board, this film could very well repeat that magic again.
Film I'm not sure on:
After Earth (5/31)- With M.Night Shyamalan behind the camera and a mediocre trailer, I'm a bit wary to see this. However, the presence of Will Smith and screenwriter Gary Whitta (The Book of Eli) peeks my interest enough to probably check it out at some point in time.
Film I have zero interest in seeing:
The Great Gatsby (5/10)- I despise the book and director Baz Luhrmann, even a solid cast with the likes of Leonardo DiCaprio, Tobey Maguire and Joel Edgerton doesn't pique my interest towards the film.
Peeples (5/10)-Craig Robinson is the man, but Tyler Perry's involvement in the production all but assures that this will a forgettable film.
Epic (5/24)-A kid's movies that just simply doesn't look like my thing.

May In Film
May provides the start of the summer season. As usual, May has only a few wide releases, but a majority of them are amongst the biggest releases of the year. Here are my thought on the first slate of summer movies.
Movies I want to see
3.Men In Black III (5/25)-I have a high level of nostalgia for Men In Black. The first two films were some of my favorite movies as a kid. Even after a ten year break and the fact that I'm now 20, I'm very excited to see these characters come back to the big screen. The plot is interesting and Josh Brolin playing young Agent K is perfect casting. I am a little wary that this will underwhelm due to the script being kind of rushed. Hopefully this is a fun throwback to the first two and not a disaster.
2.The Dictator(5/14)-Sacha Baron Cohen is a comic genius and I will watch anything he is in. Both trailers are hilarious and the departure from his normal guerrilla mockumentary style to a scripted, staged film should be an interesting one. Hopefully his comic brilliance translates to scripted filmmaking (I have feeling it will).
1.The Avengers(5/4)-The Avengers is not only my most anticipated film of May, but possibly the entire summer. This is something I've been waiting for years. The Avengers consists of pretty much the entire Marvel superheroes, which is too awesome for words. Adding to my initial excitement is the excellent early reception it's gotten. Joss Whedon is a very talented filmmaker and I can't wait to see what he did with the epic team of superheroes in The Avengers.
Films I Have Zero Interest In Seeing
Dark Shadows(5/11)-This shouldn't come as a surprise to anyone who reads my blog on a regular basis. Yet another Tim Burton/Johhny Depp pairing and as usual, Burton's annoying "look at how weird and quirky I am" style of filmmaking is on display. Hipsters and other abstract people will love it, but I'll stay far, far away from this.
Battleship(5/18)-I still can't believe this is a legitimate movie. Easily one of the worst-looking action movies in recent memory. I mean aliens in the movie version of a fucking board game? One of the new lows for Hollywood for sure.
What to Expect When You're Expecting (5/18)-Another month, another generic romantic comedy. Pass.
Chernobyl Diaries (5/25)-More found-footage horror produced by Oran Pelli? Oh boy... I wonder if we'll get nuclear scary wind instead of the regular scary wind were used to from Pelli.

May In Film
May marks the official start of summer movie season. May is actually the strongest looking month in a pretty weak looking summer(4 of my top 10 most anticipated films of the summer come out in May). Here are my thoughts on the upcoming releases in May.
Films I Want To See
4.Kung Fu Panda 2(5/26)-This might come as a shock to some people that frequent my blog, but I want to see Kung Fu Panda 2. I watched the first one out of boredom during a free preview of HBO a couple of years ago and it was pretty good. The original cast is back for the most part and this should be a good sequel.
3.Thor(5/6)-Thor isn't one of my favorite Marvel heroes, but this still looks pretty cool. The trailers looks pretty great and it looks to be very Iron Man-esque(blending action with some comedy), which is a good thing.
2.Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides(5/20)-The subtractions of Orlando Bloom and Keira Knightley and the addition of Ian McShane/return of Geoffry Rush makes me extremely excited for this movie. The trailers looks pretty damn awesome and it looks like it make up for the disappointing (but still pretty good) third film. The only potential red flag is that this was directed by Rob Marshall, who has never directed anything like this before (his previous films include Chicago and Memoirs Of A Geisha).
1. The Hangover: Part II(5/26)-The Hangover is one of my favorite comedies of all time, so naturally I can't wait to see this film. The new trailers look to be more of the same, which makes me even more pumped to see this. This is my most anticipated film of the entire summer and if it's even anywhere close to as good as the original, I will be happy.
Films I Am Unsure About
Bridesmaids(5/13)-I haven't been more split on a film in a long time. On the positive side, it's been getting really good early buzz dubbing it as the "female version of The Hangover" and Kristen Wiig is really funny (she is one of the best parts of Saturday Night Live). On the negative side, the trailers are pretty average and it could too much of a chick flick for my tastes. I'll have to see how it turns out.
Films I don't want to see (but will anyways due to my dedication to see as many 2011 films as possible)
Something Borrowed(5/6)-Generic looking romantic comedy that looks to be eye-gougingly awful, no thanks.
Jumping The Broom(5/6)-Repeat what I said for Something Borrowed.
Priest(5/13)-This look eerily similar to last year's Legion (that can be can explained, it has the same director and writers). It also looks completely stupid. Come on a god damn vampire hunting priest, that's really dumb. The action looks to be dull and the effects aren't even good.
