The Best and Worst of Lin Shaye

"The Best and Worst of" series chronicles the career highlights and lowlights of an actor starring in one of the week's new theatrical releases. This week, I take a look at the filmography of "Insidious: The Last Key" star Lin Shaye.

Films starring Lin Shaye that I've seen:
A Nightmare on Elm Street
Dumb & Dumber
Kingpin
There's Something About Mary
Detroit Rock City
Say It Ain't So
Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Meets Lloyd
Stuck on You
Cellular
Snakes on a Plane
Pledge This!
Insidious
A Good Old Fashioned Orgy

Best Performance: There's Something About Mary (1998)
While horror credits make up the bulk of her resume, Shaye's comedic work has always stood out to me. Of her many collaborations with the Farrelly Brothers over the years, her performance in There's Something About Mary stands firmly above the rest. As the dog-kissing roommate of Cameron Diaz's titular character, Shaye proves to be one of the strongest scene-stealers in a film with no shortage of them.

Worst Performance: Insidious (2011)
This role was the catalyst for Shaye's recent resurgence, but I thought she was awful in this part. Aside from the absurd direction the story went in, Shaye's melodramatic turn as a medium tasked with helping a married couple (Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne) get rid of a demon that looks like Darth Maul's brother that's possessing their young son (Ty Simpkins) is the biggest reason Insidious went off-the-rails after a strong first half.

Best Film: There's Something About Mary (1998)
The Farrelly Brothers early filmography is loaded with top-notch dumb comedies and There's Something About Mary is among my personal favorites. Every single actor involved knocks their respective role out of the park, the jokes are consistently strong and the script does a great job of intertwining over-the-top gross-out humor and genuine heart.

Worst Film: Dumb and Dumberer: When Harry Met Lloyd (2003)
On the opposite end of the dumb comedy spectrum, comes Dumb and Dumberer. Troy Miller's prequel to the beloved Dumb and Dumber is in contention with Be Cool, Sweet Home Alabama and Larry the Cable Guy: Health Inspector for the title of worst comedy I've ever watched. The attempts to recreate Dumb and Dumber's signature slapstick-heavy brand of humor fail miserably and Derek Richardson and Eric Christian Olsen, who portray the teenage versions of Harry and Lloyd respectively, possess none of the likability, chemistry or brilliant comedic timing that made Jim Carrey and Jeff Daniels such a perfect duo.

Thank you for reading this week's installment of "The Best and Worst of". The next victim of my praise and ire will be "The Commuter" star Patrick Wilson.
