Album Review: Playboi Carti-Die Lit

It's difficult to explain the appeal of Playboi Carti's music without sounding like a complete maniac. Carti is a minimally charismatic, often lethargic presence with mic skills that are sloppy on a good day, yet he almost always manages to deliver a product that is really enjoyable to listen to. On his official debut LP Die Lit, the most inexplicably enjoyable rapper to ever hop into a booth shines a bright light on these unconventional musical gifts by putting forth the strongest effort of his pretty brief career thus far.

What makes Carti such a compelling figure is the emphasis he puts on utilizing bold production. While he's far from the only rapper that choses to let the beat do the heavy lifting, Carti has a tendency to gravitate towards shit that is more visceral and off-the-wall than the genre norm. This audial gift gets taken to the next level on Die Lit. Enlisting frequent collaborator Pi'erre Bourne to handle the bulk of the work behind the boards was a brilliant creative decision that heightened the suffocating atmosphere that drives his music. Bourne's mesmerizing beats transform Carti's parade of ablib-and-excess driven verses into hypnotic blasts of ignorant oddball trap that left me feeling like I had floated into a parallel universe where sports cars, Instagram models and hallucinogenic substances reign supreme. When you roll out music with an aesthetic that's as hard-hitting and richly textured as the one that flows through Die Lit, the lack of technical proficiency present in the rapping doesn't matter in the slightest.

As satisfied as I am with the current state of hip-hop, I completely understand the criticisms that are lobbied towards records like Die Lit. Listening to collections of tracks about popping pills, buying designer clothes and having wild sex with a multitude of women can be really tedious, particularly if you have an affinity for the genre's rich history of raw, powerful storytelling. That being said, plenty of other genres have artists that are solely renowned for their instrumentation and I don't see why hip-hop should be viewed through a different lens. Beats are the hip-hop equivalent of a cool guitar riff or a thundering bassline and when an album boasts a collection of strong ones, it can serve as the driving force behind its memorability, catchiness, etc. Die Lit is as effective as a mood piece can possibly be and I'd recommend it to anyone that's willing to look past the repetitive, non-lyrical structure of the rapping.

Album Review: Dying Fetus-Wrong One to Fuck With

Old-school death metal fans are currently experiencing what their comrades in the thrash community went through in the late 90's/early 2000's. While no one besides Morbid Angel (sup IIud Divinium Insanus) has released anything as notoriously shit-laden as Metallica's St. Anger or Megadeth's Risk, the forefathers of the genre that are still standing (Suffocation, Obituary, Deicide) have spent the 2010's releasing safe, standard-issue material that's missing a lot of the edge and sinister magic that made them special. Slam pioneers Dying Fetus have proven to be among the small number of acts that have sidestepped this "iconic death metal bands throwing in the creative towel once they hit 40" epidemic. The Maryland-based trio rebounded from their mid-2000's slump (Stop at Nothing, War of Attrition) with 2009's eyebrow-raising aural assault Descend Into Depravity and have been on an unstoppable warpath ever since. After a 5-year hiatus from releasing new music, Dying Fetus has kept their hot streak alive with the exceptional Wrong One to Fuck With.

What makes Wrong One to Fuck With such an impressive accomplishment is its unwavering consistency. All 12 tracks on this record are expertly-assembled symphonies of destruction that feature enough punchy riffs, pummeling blast beats and pit-starting breakdowns to fill a 12-disc box set. The construction of this record isn't going to shock anyone that's heard the last couple of Dying Fetus records, but the sheer level of craftsmanship it took to make a 53-minute slab of tech-tinged brutal death metal as engaging and memorable as this impressed the hell out of me.

The unrelenting intensity and quality present on Wrong One to Fuck With is a testament to how well-oiled of a machine Dying Fetus is at this point of their career. Listening to guitarist/vocalist John Gallagher, bassist/vocalist Sean Beasley and drummer Trey Williams play together is pretty much the death metal equivalent of having three elite yet humble maestros on the same stage. Each member possesses the chops to run the show themselves, but they understand that they're a lot more dangerous if they combine their individual talents into one flawlessly synchronized collective. The top-notch chemistry between the members of the current lineup-who have been playing together since late 2007-is a large part of why Dying Fetus is still putting out crushing, badass death metal a mere 21 years after the release of their debut album.

At a time where their peers are coasting into their AARP years on autopilot, Dying Fetus continues to deliver some of the most suffocating, headbang-worthy heavy music on the planet. Dying Fetus' ability to blossom and thrive as musicians this far into their musical journey will hopefully inspire the next wave of bands set to hit old age (The Black Dahlia Murder, Behemoth, Gojira) from copying the formulaic sins committed by most of the genre's OG bands. If Dying Fetus wasn't already considered death metal royalty, Wrong One to Fuck With should be enough to finally get them a prime seat at that unholy table.

Album Review: After The Burial-In Dreams

"In Dreams", the long awaited 3rd release from fast-rising Minnesota act After The Burial is finally here. Since their last record "Rareform", After The Burial has risen substainally in popularity and picked up a new vocalist. "In Dreams" makes some changes to After The Burial's sound, but nothing too drastic and it works for them.

The biggest difference from "Rareform" to "In Dreams", is new vocalist Anthony Notarmaso. This is his first release of new material with them (ATB re-recorded "Rareform" with Nottarmaso on vocals last year), and he rises to the occasion. I would actually say he fits the band better than their previous vocalist. "In Dreams", also features clean vocals, which "Rareform" did not. There has been a lot of complaining about the use of clean vocals on this record. I will say they aren't the greatest vocals ever, but they aren't the complete travesty some fans are making it out to be. I actually liked the clean vocals on "To Carry You Away", they fit the song well and gave the track some more depth.

"In Dreams", for the most part keeps the After The Burial sound in tack. The progessive riffing and overall vibe of opener "My Frailty", is very "Rareform"-esque. This what After The Burial likes to do, be heavy and have nice little progessive sections. "In Dreams" has plenty of groove and progessiveness to go around. The tempo-changes are improved from "Rareform", they seem to flow more seemlessly this time around.

"In Dreams" is worth checking out. After The Burial has a ton of talent, their guitarwork is excelllent and they are quite a few great riffs here. Anthony Notarmaso does a fine job on vocals and he is probably the best vocalist After The Burial has ever had. "In Dreams" might take After The Burial in a slightly different direction, but their core sound is still in place and it's another solid release from them.

Album Review: Finntroll-Nifelvind

I am finally starting to catch up on a few records that were released in the first half of the year. I still have some left to listen to but it seems like there were a few gems that I ignored untill now. Among those is the new record from Finnish folk metal act Finntroll.
Finntroll has always been a band that plays a unique style of folk metal. Of course they still have the folky crazy parts with folk instruments but out of all the folk metal acts that I listen to Finntroll is the heaviest. They effortless blend folk metal with old-school euro black/death metal. Througout its duration Nifelvind seems like one big party. From the intro track "Blodmarsch" to the preceding track "Solsagan" you can tell exactly how great and fun Nifelvind will be. Sure its still a heavy record for folk metal its actually very heavy but Fintroll knows how to blend the elements of folk and death metal extremely well. Plain and simple if your are listening to this record and are a fan of the genre you will have a fun time listening. That being said if you don't like folk metal this album most likely won't change your mind. It has all the core elements of a typical folk metal record and really doesn't try anything too out of the blue for folk metal.
Fintroll has done it again an stuck to their winning formula. They have made a folky and fun yet heavy record. I am sure these tracks sound even better live and hopefully they do another US tour soon so I get the chance to see them live. Nifelvind is going to make a run at my top 20 albums of the year for sure. 2010 needed another great folk metal record and Finntroll has delivered in that area. Bottom line when it comes to folk metal not many acts maintain the balance of heavy and folk as well as Fintroll and they are absoultey one of the leaders for the genre.

Album Review: Korn-Korn III: Remember Who You Are

Korn was one of the band's that was highly influential into getting me into metal. The infectious grooves and originality of their earlier work was excellent and started the wave of the mostly shit genre of nu-metal. After 1999's Issues Korn started to slip a little with 2002's Untouchables and 2003's Take A Look In The Mirror. After these records is when all broke loose. 2005's See You On The Other Side was pretty awful but the following record 2008's Untitled was an absolute abnomination and would go down as easily the worst Korn record ever and for me at least one of the worst albums I had ever heard in my entire life.
Thankfully with Remember Who You Are Korn does just that. They went back to the sound of their earlier records. It is a good thing they went back to their musical roots on this record because it is clear this is where they belong on the sound spectrum. Unlike most bands who hype up their new record to be something Korn does follow through with their promise of going back to heavier, simpler style that brought to where they are today. Tracks like "The Past" are heavy and bassy and sound like a rare, missing track from Life Is Peachy. As usual Jonathan Davis brings his highly intense and unique vocals back to the forefront and the lyrics are much better than on the past 2 records. That being said not everything works on this records. They a couple of songs that are very average on this record. For example "Pop A Pill" is one of these tracks. It starts off heavy but then about half way through it become really slow. Normally I am fan of contrasting parts in a song as long as they blend together in Korn's case they really don't blend together and it just sounds really terrible.
I will say that this is a good stepping stone for Korn. They are playing what is working again for them and the results for the most part click. The only problems that really stick out are the lack of excellent songs. Don't get me wrong They are plenty of good ones but this record doesn't have a "Blind" or a "Got The Life" or a "Make Me Bad. Korn has crafted a solid album and it good to see them back on the right path in their career.

Mid-Year Report:Music

After a fanatastic 2009, 2010 would most likely pale in comparison and that it does. There has been a plethora of decent to good releases but a only select few have excellent. 2010 has been home to a lot of dissapointments with some normally great artists (Rob Zombie,Eminem, a couple more) dropping the ball and coming out with really lame records. There has been a few very pleasant surprises(Annotations Of An Autopsy a band that I used to loathe with a passion coming out with a very good record being the most notable).Along with such always reliable favorites of my mine(The Dillinger Escape Plan,High On Fire,As I Lay Dying) meeting expectations and making excellent records that currently top my list. Hopefully 2010's 2nd half can deliver some excellent records but after 2009 2010 is pretty much a hard act to follow. Here is the rankings of all 30 records I have listened to up to this point in the year complete with star ratings.

Album Review: Parkway Drive-Deep Blue

Austraila's Parkway Drive has never been at the top of the metalcore heap. They play your standard meat and potatoes metalcore with a pretty good amount of breakdowns and vocals that are all over the place. That being said Parkway Drive music though pretty basic has always been pretty enjoyable. Their latest Deep Blue continues the trend of Parkway Drive being enjoyable to listen to.
Deep Blue is a little bit different than past Parkway Drive releases. Most of the Parkway Drive formula is still in play breakdowns, catchy riffs etc but there are a couple of surprises to keep their style fresh. The biggest surprise is an apperance by Brett Gurewitz guitarist from punk legends Bad Religion on "Home Is For The Heartless", one of the records standout tracks. His style of playing complients Parkway Drive's crushing riffs well and it is a welcome addition to this record. For longtime fans their is still plenty to like here, Parkway Drive didn't stray too far from its roots as demonstrated by tracks such as lead single "Sleepwalker". They still have heavy yet catchy riffs, melodic soloing and the chaotic vocal attack of Winston McCall. The only thing that really weighs this record down is some of the breakdowns feel really forced and don't belong especially on "Unrest". The song only clocks in at around 2:30 and the breakdowns feel like they are just there for the sake of being there.
This record is worth checking out if you are fan of Parkway Drive or metalcore. Though not that original it still gets the job done. Parkway Drive doesn't dissapoint and continues to make solid albums and if they make a few slight changes to their sound I think they could take that next step as a band.

Album Review: Nachtmystium-Addicts: Black Meddle Part 2

Nachtmystium is one of the strangest bands in the entire metal scene right now. They have elements of pschydelic rock, euro-trance, prog rock, post-rock and black metal. It sounds like an extremely odd combination on paper and the sound is just as strange and it works to mixed results.
Nachtmystium is no stranger to this style. This magnum opus series of albums that started with 2008 "Assassins: Black Meddle Part 1" was odd, unique and it clicked for the most part. Sadly Addicts lacks the coheison that Assassins had. Don't get wrong there is a lot of good stuff here that is executed extremely well but some of the ideas are just too out there and just do not click as a whole. A prime example of a misfire on this album is "Then Fires" its pretty much a tribute to jam bands like Phish and it really is just a mess of a song. Despite its flaws though there are moments of sheer brillance on this record. Such as "Nightfall" which is by far the best track on Addicts and it has everything that makes Nachtymystium one of the most creative and edgy bands in all of metal.
This record is completley hit or miss. There are a good amount of genius moments and good amount of WTF moments. This record is also absoultely a grower and it will take mulitple listens to solidify your opinion of it. Nachtmystium is defintley ambitious and 100% unique but sometimes too much of both for their own good.

Album Review: Nas/Damian Marley-Distant Relatives

Finally a mainstream rapper taking a risk on a record! Recently plenty of mainstream rappers that I have enjoyed in the past (Jay-Z,Eminem(a review for his new record Recovery should be up in the next couple of days, etc) have sold out and made complete commerical shit that has nothing in common with their previous records. Nas has always been one of the best rap acts around and with his new collobration record with Damian Marley he proves that he is not going down the same path.
The best thing about this record is the beats. There is a lot of experimentation with the tribal music of Africa and other world music that is really original and fresh. I haven't heard beats this good in quite some time. Damian Marley's prescense also adds a whole new range to Nas's style and they suit each other very well. Reggage and rap might be two different genres, but on this record the blend is just right with not letting one another completely take control of the record. Another huge standout is the lyrics. They are extremely heartfelt about the world's problems. "Africa Must Wake Up" and "Land Of Promise" are particularlly powerful and convey the strongest message on the record.
This is a must-listen record for hip-hop fans. In a genre that is currently full of forgettable, meaningless trash, Nas and Damian Marley have made a standout record. Kudos to Nas for not selling out and sticking to his artistic vision unlike so many of his peers.

Album Review: Whitechapel-A New Era Of Corruption

Pleasant surprise is one of the best emotions you can feel. Pleasant surprise is the perfect way to describe Whitechapel's new record A New Era Of Corruption. Upon the announcement of this record I was pretty excited. I really dug their last release "This Is Exile" but when they released the first single "The Darkest Day Of Man" my excitement for the new record went down a lot. Thankfully "The Darkest Day Of Man" is the lowlight of the album and there is a lot of songs on here that more than make up for it.
Whitechapel has always gotten a lot of shit from the death-metal purists because of their breakdown-heavy brand of deathcore. Whitechapel comes out and proves their harshest critics wrong with the album's opening one-two punch "Devolver" and "Breeding Violence". These tracks have great heavy riffs and blistering solos that will catch a lot people by surprise. Actually their is a lot on this record that caught be by surprise. Some songs ("Single File To Dehumanization","Prayer Of Mockery","Necromechanical") don't even sound like Whitechapel at all. I never excepted piano, accoustic guitar and even industrial-metal style riffing on a Whitechapel record. Sure there are still breakdowns, blast beats and Phil Bozeman's trademark bark but Whitechapel experimented with things and showed they do have range and aren't just another one-dimesional,boring deathcore band.
I have to give Whitechapel props for this record. There is a bunch of things I never thought I would hear on Whitechapel record. Whitechapel is a deathcore band that is very near the top in terms of quailty in the genre and deserve some respect from the purists.

Album Review: Howl-Full Of Hell

Debut albums are always an intresting topic. They are always your first impression of how band might be. Some bands strike you immidately by how good their first album Other bands evolve and get better as time goes on. Howl is one of those bands who strike upon first listen.
Full Of Hell is actually one of the most impressive debut albums of the past few years. Howl's mix of Mastodon sludge and Saint Vitus doom is very effective. The styles are rarely more effectively combined or done with such precision. I would have to stay though the most impressive thing about this record is the riffs. Howl writes some of the best riffs I have heard in quite some time. The riffs are extremely heavy yet slow and pretty. How tight the band plays together is also quite the feat. They sound like they have put about 4 or 5 albums already. Most bands wish they had Howl's level of cohesiveness.
If Howl keeps up at this pace they will be joining Mastodon,Baroness and Kylesa as sludge legends. Though this only their debut album, if they keep up the slick riffs, awesome sludge/doom fusion and their spectauclar coheviseness they will be pretty much be a tour-de force band. Howl is one of the bands to watch for the next couple of years and I think they will explode. Howl has enormous potential and I am eagerly awaiting their next release.

Album Review: Deftones-Diamond Eyes

Deftones have been through a lot recently. Bassist Chi Cheng had a severe car crash in November 2008. He was in a coma for about 2 months untill he woke up again. He still can not walk but he is slowly getting better. In the wake of this Deftones scrapped their already-recorded still unrelased record Eros to write Diamond Eyes.
I was not really a fan of the Deftones. Their music has always been really average and just really nothing stood out about it. The only album of theirs I somewhat enjoyed was White Pony. I decided though that I would give Diamond Eyes a chance mainly due to the very postive feedback and the possibilty of seeing them live with Alice In Chains and Mastodon. I am glad I did.
The thing that stands out most about Diamond Eyes is Chino Moreno's vocals. He has really raised the bar vocally for himself. Chino also does a great job lyrically. He focuses on a lot of positive themes and their is a lot of thought put into his lyrics. This record is also noticeably heavier than past Deftones record. Tracks like "You've Seen The Butcher" and "CMND/CTRL" are among the heaviest Deftones tracks ever recorded. Heavy works a lot better for the Deftones than the experimental sound of their past couple records. Despite being heavy at points its also really melodic. There is a lot of different styles here and I can defintley dig that.
This record is worth checking out for sure. It has a lot of appeal to people who like a lot of different genres. This is the best Deftones record yet and as pretty much a complete non-fan prior this to record, Diamond Eyes turned me into a fan.
