August in Film

August sees the summer movie season finally coming to a close. There is a solid number of films I'm interested in and will hopefully lead to a series of films that close out the summer on a high note. Here are my thoughts on the entire slate of August films.

Films I want to see:
5.The World's End (8/23):Simon Pegg and Nick Frost re-teaming for a sci-fi horror comedy? Count me in! If it even comes close to rivaling the genius of Shaun of the Dead, audiences will be in for a treat.

4.We're the Millers (8/7):The red-band trailer/concept are hilarious and the cast including Jason Sudekis, Jennifer Aniston, Ed Helms and Nick Offerman are proven comedy vets. Not to mention Rawson Marshall Thurder (Dodgeball) is in the director's chair and the writing team is responsible for such films as Wedding Crashers, Hot Tub Time Machine and She's Out of My League. 2013 is desperate for another great comedy and on paper, We're the Millers seems like a winner.

3.2 Guns (8/2):The combo of Denzel Washington and Mark Wahlberg is already enough to pique my interest, but this movie just looks like a lot of fun and seems like it has a definitive old-school buddy flick vibe to it.

2.Elysium (8/9):Neil Bloomkamp's long-awaited follow-up to District 9 looks like a winner. Matt Damon is one of the more consistent actors in Hollywood and the class divide concept looks interesting. Bloomkamp is one of the most intriguing directors out there right now and until he lets me down, I'll be excited for every one of his projects.

1.Kick-Ass 2 (8/16): Kick-Ass is one of my favorite movies of all-time, so naturally I'm stoked on the sequel. Everything I've seen so far looks fantastic (Jim Carrey looks like he owned the role of Colonel Stars and Stripes) so I'm hoping this is another badass action-comedy that does the legacy of the original proud.

Films I'm not sure on:
Lee Daniels' The Butler (8/16):This seems like an interesting story (especially since it's true,) but nothing I've seen on it so far has too excited and the many-generational storyline could get messy. If the reception is good, I'll give it a watch.

Paranoia (8/16):The concept seems kind of cool and Gary Oldman is good in everything, the trailer just looks pretty average to me.

You're Next (8/23):It looks just alright, but the reception on the festival circuit has been incredible touting it as one of the best horror films in recent memory. I'm willing to check it out at some point, I just don't want to buy into the hype on another well-received horror film and end up wanting to rip my eyes out while watching it (a la Evil Dead.)

Closed Circuit (8/28): Haven't seen the trailer yet.

Getaway (8/30): Same as Closed Circuit.

Film I have zero interest in:
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters (8/7): It doesn't look overly bad, I just never the saw first one and don't really care about seeing this one.

Planes (8/9): Disney's aerial answer to Cars: I'll pass.

Jobs (8/16):Ashton Kutcher as Steve Jobs is simply hilarious to me and it looks pretty damn bad to me. I think I'll wait till the Aaron Sorkin Steve Jobs bio pic for my fix of hearing the life story of the Apple CEO.

The Mortal Instruments: City of Bones (8/21): Looks like a sightly more tolerable version of Twilight plus Lilly Collins is one of the worst actresses I've ever seen on film.

One Direction: This is Us (8/30): Just no.

August In Film

August marks the last month of the Summer movie season and what a great one it has been. August has a few exciting releases along with the typical end-of summer junk that is dumped out in the last couple of weeks of the month. Here is my thoughts on the entire slate of August films.

Films I want to see:
4.The Bourne Legacy (8/10)-While I do think the Bourne films are overrated, I still enjoy them. The Bourne Legacy looks to be the best of the series. I like the concept that there are more people like Jason Bourne out there and Jermey Renner is a great choice for the lead role. Early reception is good as well and this might be the first Bourne movie I see in theaters.

3.Lawless(8/29)-I am a big fan of westerns and Lawless looks to be a great one. It has a great trailer and talented cast anchored by Tom Hardy, Gary Oldman, Guy Pearce, and Jessica Chastain. This could also prove that Shia LaBeouf has a future as a legitimate actor and not just an action star. I also think making a movie about bootlegging could be very interesting since it's a topic that hasn't really been covered by too many movies.

2.The Campaign(8/10)-This movie has a ton of potential. Two of the finest comic actors in the business in Will Ferrell and Zach Galifianakis along with a strong supporting cast including Dylan McDermott, Jason Sudekis, John Lithgow, and Dan Akroyd and a script written by two of the writers of Eastbound and Down could make for another elite 2012 comedy.

1.The Expendables 2(8/17)-Being the action whore that I am, This is of course my most anticipated movie of the month. The first one was one of the finest action movies in recent memory. This one looks to be trying top the original by adding action legends Chuck Norris and Jean-Claude Van Damme to the fold on top of the already stacked cast of action heroes past and present. Bruce Willis and Arnold Schwarzenegger have also been given larger roles expanding upon their cameos in the first one which is awesome. The now confirmed R-rating (It was previously rumored to be PG-13) makes me just as excited to see this as I was the first one.

Film I'm not sure about
Total Recall (8/3)-Though the newest trailer is actually pretty good, I'm still on the fence on this one. It definitely could be cool given it's concept, solid cast, and Len Wiseman directing. At the same time the first couple of trailers were just alright and made it out to be a generic action movie. Kurt Wimmer's hit-or-miss screenwriting is also a bit unsettling. I am definitely somewhat intrigued but I'm not going into it with high expectations.

Hit and Run(8/22)-This is just barely in this section because the redband trailer didn't make me laugh once. The theaterical trailer isn't too bad though and it might end up being watchable. Might catch it on DVD depending on the reception.

Films I have no interest in:
Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (8/3)-I saw the previous installment last year and I didn't like it, so I won't be seeing this.

Hope Springs (8/8)-I'm not even close to the target audience of older females that this film has. I'm sure it's well-made, but I can pretty much guarantee that I wouldn't like this.

The Odd Life of Timothy Green (8/15)-I am going to be completely honest this is one of the dumbest concepts for a movies I've ever seen. A movie about a couple that can't conceive a child so they put a bunch of qualities they would want in their kid in a box and bury it and the next morning this plant kid emerges on their front door. Seriously? It makes sense that Frank Zappa's wrote the story to this movie because a plot like this can can only be thought of while high on some type of hallucinogenic drugs. I wouldn't see this movie unless I was payed a substantial amount.

Paranorman (8/17)-Even though Tim Burton has nothing to do with this, It looks very much like the style of animated films that he does (stop-motion horror-themed comedies) so I will be steering clear of this.

Sparkle(8/17)-It's a musical, Enough said.

The Apparition (8/24)-Pretty stupid looking horror movie about an entity that was created during a college experiment gone wrong. I will give them points for thinking outside of the box a bit, but it still looks pretty bad.

Premium Rush (8/24)-Runner-up for stupidest concept I've heard in a while: Premium Rush. It's an action movie based around bike messengers in New York City having to deliver a dangerous package while being chased around a dirty cop who wants it. If it's really that dangerous of a package then why the fuck is a dude on a bike taking it? Even with Joesph Gordon-Levitt being in the lead role, I have no interest in seeing this.

The Possession(8/31)-It looks slightly better than most recent exorcism movies and Sam Rami's presence as a producer is encouraging, but it's still another demonic possession movie. I won't see this unless the reception is extremely positive.

August In Film

August is here already and in the film world that means the end of the summer movie season. August tends to bring a couple of major blockbusters and a lot of mid-range films and this August is no exception. Here are my thoughts on the upcoming crop of August films.

Films I Want To See:

2.The Change-Up (8/5)-A lot of people think this looks like shit, but I have to disagree. I think this looks very funny. Jason Bateman and Ryan Reynolds make a good pairing and they are both funny dudes. David Dobkin being on board as the director is another promising sign. I don't know if I will see this in the theater, but I am still excited to see it.

1.30 Minutes Or Less (8/12)- Where to start with why I want to see 30 Minutes Or Less? The cast is completely outstanding. Jesse Eisenberg, Danny McBride, Aziz Anzari, and Nick Swardson IN THE SAME MOVIE!!! That's just flat-out awesome. The trailers (especially the red band ones) are comic gold. The director, Ruben Fisecher, is also excellent. I am expecting big things from this and it could end up being the funniest film of 2011.

Films I Am Not Sure About:

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes(8/5)- This could go either way. It's either going to be really good or it's going to be a pile of shit. The trailers don't really help me form a view either. We'll have to wait and see how this pans out.

Conan(8/19)-This was in the "Films I Have No Interest In Seeing" section until I saw the red-band trailer. I am still not completely sold, but the red-band trailer looks promising.

Colombiana(8/26)-Luc Besson's presence on the script is good, but the trailers make this out to be nothing special.

Don't Be Afraid Of The Dark(8/26)-The trailer pulled off the rare feat of making me jump. That being said, Gullmero Del Toro's horror films have a bad track record with me despite their critical accliam. The early reception has been mixed, which is not a great sign. I am still curious to see this film to see if it can deliver some actual scares.

Our Idiot Brother(8/26)-I love Paul Rudd, but this movie looks too hipster for my tastes. Hopefully it's not, but i'm not crossing my fingers.

Films I have zero interest in seeing (but will anyways due to my goal for 2011 films)

The Help(8/10)-This looks extremely generic and dull. There has been far too many films like this in the past and this looks like it's not going to bring anything remotely fresh to the table.

Final Destination 5(8/12)-Can they seriously stop making these? The first two were so fucking bad and I can imagine they have only gotten worse over time. This one looks to be the most unimginative one yet (and that's saying something.)

Glee: The 3D Concert Movie(8/12)-I am making an exception for my goal for 2011 films, I can't bring myself to watch this movie. I loathe Glee with a passion.

Fright Night(8/19)-This looks completely horrible. The trailer is laughable in the parts where it's trying to be serious and unfunny in the parts where it's trying to be funny. It looks like a jumbled horror/comedy mess.

One Day(8/19)-Yawn, another generic romantic drama. Pass.

Spy Kids: All The Time In The World(8/19)-Robert Rodriguez, I beg you to start work on Sin City 2. I honestly can't believe they made another Spy Kids movie. The first one wasn't bad, but the following two....
