2016 in Film: A Year in Review

I can't recall another year in film in recent memory that was as strange as 2016. Despite the fact that there was a very small number of films that I absolutely loved (only three films received a 4.5/5 rating compared to seven in 2015), there was a lot more very good-to-great films, and significantly less straight-up duds and disappointments than there were in 2014 and 2015.

While there was certain genres that rose above the rest (comedy, horror/thriller), 2016's success stories spanned the entire cinematic spectrum. There were powerful indie dramas (Manchester by the Sea, Don't Think Twice), white-knuckle thrill rides (Green Room, 10 Cloverfield Lane) and of course, your obligatory R-rated animated comedy that is part over-the-top vulgar sex comedy, part religious allegory (Sausage Party).

The brunt of 2016's failures and letdowns stemmed from its relatively underwhelming awards-season slate and hotly-anticipated blockbusters that failed to deliver the unique thrills they promised. These critically-acclaimed awards contenders (Moonlight, Nocturnal Animals, Fences) and ambitious blockbusters (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, Deadpool, Captain America: Civil War) squandered their flashes of immense potential on final products that were nowhere near noteworthy.

Below you'll find a complete list of every film I saw from 2016 ranked from worst to best (with star ratings) as well as my picks for the best performances, biggest surprises/letdowns and a whole lot more. Hope you enjoy, and let's all hope for a less erratic cinematic year in 2017.
