So, what are the big takeaways from 2023 in music with the benefit of some hindsight? Well for starters, I don't know how/why Bay Area slam death metal outfit Snuffed on Sight managed to slip past me last year, but I'm grateful to have since discovered them because their record Smoke is a deliriously fun, lethally efficient slice of riff-driven brutality. Then, there's the issue of the vendetta I had against Yves Tumor after being underwhelmed by their live show when I saw them late last year being shelved and their terrific record Praise a Lord Who Chews but Which Does Not Consume (or Simply, Hot Between Worlds) rising up to the top 15 as a result. Lastly, Chappell Roan is going to command the spotlight for a long, long time and The Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess will eventually be lauded as an iconic debut album that people will cherish for generations to come.
Aside from that, there wasn't much notable change. There was some reshuffling of the middlers down in the 80's/90's, Olivia Rodrigo's GUTS grew on a bit and Doja Cat's pivot to straightforward hip hop on Scarlet loses some of its shine on further listens, but aside from that, mostly everything remained around the same place it was in January including the entire top 10.
