Album Review: Times Of Grace-The Hymn Of A Broken Man

"Reunited and it feels so good", Peaches and Herb exclaimed in the 1978 disco classic "Reunited". This could also apply to ex-Killswitch Engage vocalist Jesse Leach and current Killswitch Engage guitarist Adam Dutkiewicz, who reunited and formed Times Of Grace. The Hymn Of A Broken Man marks the first times Leach and Dutkiewicz have made music since the classic Killswitch Engage album Alive Or Just Breathing in 2002. This record is a hell of a way to reunite after all their years apart.
The Hymn Of A Broken Man is a surprisingly melodic effort, which works very well for them. I was expecting a melodic effort, but not like this. Acoustic guitars are used on certain tracks, there are even a couple of ballads! This makes Times Of Grace sound more versatile than I would have expected. Jesse Leach does a magnificent job with vocals. The raw emotion and power of his voice make his positiver and emotional lyrics seems authentic. Leach is one of the best overall vocalists in the metal world and this is a glorious return to for him after spending some time in the world of southern rock with his last band, Seemless. Adam D steps up his guitarwork. This record finally showcases his immense talent as a guitar player. He can solo with the best of him especially on tracks like "Strength In Numbers" and "Worlds Apart".
The Hymn Of A Broken Man is a must listen for fans of old Killswitch Engage or similar acts. It's a great record that has tinges of Jeese Leach-era Killswitch mixed with a more melodic sound. There is a lot of catchy riffs, amazing singing and screaming vocals from Leach and even some experimentation thrown in for good measure. It's great to see Leach and Dutkiewicz back together making music, this is a damn fine record and I hope this side project continues to make music in the future.
